High-Level International Meeting Was Held in Nairobi

A high-level international meeting was held in Nairobi on the development of an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.
From June 30 to July 2, 2025, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (IGC) for the Development of an International Legally Binding Instrument on Plastic Pollution held a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia sent a delegation to the meeting, led by Tigran Gabrielyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA. Arsen Nikoyan, Deputy Head of the Department of International Cooperation, also took part in the delegation.
The meeting was organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) within the framework of Resolution 5/14, adopted by the United Nations Environment Assembly in 2022, entitled “End Plastic Pollution: Towards an International Legally Binding Instrument.”
The meeting aimed to provide a platform for the exchange of interstate views and the clarification of national positions in preparation for the second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2), scheduled to take place in August 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The discussions focused on:
possible approaches to finalizing a legally binding international instrument;
strategic preparatory steps for concluding the negotiation process;
practical cooperation on the organizational and procedural aspects of INC-5.2.
The meeting provided an important opportunity to strengthen effective interaction among Member States, build consensus around a common vision, and advance targeted efforts toward a coordinated international response to plastic pollution.
